Motorola DEFY: A tough little cookie

MANILA, Philippines — Ruggedness takes a new face in the new Motorola DEFY. Pardon the pun, but believe us when we tell you, this little hombre actually defies the two major elements we hate hitting our precious handsets -- dust and water.

And it is also scratch resistant, a third factor that made us think again: Do we really need a sugar-coated handset that is as dainty as a porcelain tea cup?

The first time got hold of DEFY, we already came to the conclusion that this is one on the tough side. The long edges each sport three screws holding the shiny front plate to the matte rubberised back. There's another screw on the bottom edge. Kinda' like a Frankenstein monster.

The top houses a 3.5mm headset connector and left side the micro-USB port both with rubberized covers to help prevent dust and dirt getting in. For the first time, holding a brand-new unit with our clammy hands is no worry.

The backplate is held down by a lock slider for that snug fit. Both SIM and microSD card slots are under the battery. The Gorilla Glass screen is designed to resist scratching. Our editor, ArtSam, was first to scrape the unit against a wooden table, then poured some water from a drinking glass, and we went ga-ga.

The drop tests also went on fine, just don't ask us how we did them.
