Motorola targets 1 million XOOM sales in three months

Having unveiled its first foray into the tablet market at the Consumer Electronics Show last week, Motorola is reported to be producing 800,000 of its XOOM device ahead of launch.

Expected to hit stores across the globe in March, Motorola is believed to be targeting 1 million unit sales by the mid point of 2011 with the moniker of the first device to sport Google’s upcoming tablet-friendly Android 3.0, Honeycomb operating system a key selling point.

Set to feature a 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, 10.1-inch 1280 x 800p display, front and rear facing cameras with 720p HD video recording capabilities and 32GB of internal storage, the 3G and Wi-Fi enabled XOOM was yesterday made available for pre-order in the UK with a hefty £720 price mark.

Whilst this pricing has yet to be confirmed, or denied, by Motorola, we struggle to see how the company could hope to sell in excess of 1 million units in a three month period if this lofty price tag proves accurate. Further sentencing the XOOM to overpriced failure, a comparably speced Apple iPad, the market leading tablet of choice, is over £100 cheaper with entry level iPads available for as little as £439.

Does the XOOM’s impressive spec sheet make up for its sky-high price point? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.
