Nintendo CEO: We plan to sell 4m 3DS consoles by March

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has outlined his company’s plans to ship 4 million units of its 3DS console worldwide by the end of March. He also stated in an interview with Japan’s Wall Street Journal that this would comprise around 1.5 million units sold in Japan. Iwata offered the views at a special Nintendo World 2011 event in Tokyo where he also outlined the launch titles for the console and the threat posed by Apple.

The only Nintendo published 3D title on launch will be Nintendogs & Cats, while other titles to accompany the February 26 Japanese launch will include Ridge Racer 3D, Street Fighter IV and Winning Eleven 3D Soccer. Iwata also took the opportunity to reiterate the warning Nintendo has issued advising children under 6 to avoid playing the console in 3D mode as it could affect the development of their eyesight. He stressed that the console is not dangerous, but that Nintendo’s warning were inline with those issued by manufacturers of 3D TVs.

Iwata was asked about the threat to specialized console gaming posed by the iPod touch, iPhone and other mobile phones and suggested that "A threat is often the flip side of an opportunity.” He contends that people who may not have been interested in games could become interested in taking their mobile gaming to another level on a specialized platform.

As it currently stands in the console wars, Nintendo’s DS has soundly beaten its traditional console rival in Sony. Nintendo has sold over 135 million units of its DS since its launch, while the Sony PSP has only sold just over 51 million units. However, the threat offered by the combination of cheap games on Apple’s iTunes store and the gaming prowess of its iOS devices is formidable. By the end of September 2010, Apple announced that it had sold in excess of 120 million iOS devices. It is a threat that Nintendo is not taking lightly.
