One of Apple's key partners for making the CDMA iPhone has already had to increase its production estimates for anticipated demand, part suppliers said Monday night. Pegatron would pass its original estimates of 10 million iPhones to make between 12 million and 15 million for 2011. Apple's demand "continues to stay strong" and forced Pegatron to step up its efforts, Digitimes understood.
If accurate and linked to previous slips, Apple's primary contractor Foxconn would make a similar amount and could lead to as many as 30 million CDMA iPhones shipping this year.
The shipment volumes could run well over pre-unveiling analyst estimates of 20 million or less and contribute significantly to Apple's total phone shipments, which with GSM alone are unofficially predicted to run to 60 million.
Much of the production would be targeted at Verizon. Recent leaks, however, have pointed to worldwide CDMA launches for those large carriers that Apple hasn't been able to touch in countries it already serves.
The American company has been eager to disrupt Google's 'safe zones' on carriers like Verizon and Korea's SK Telecom where Android has received full marketing attention.
