ZTE overtakes Apple in global sales

Figures released today by Anaylist firm IDC have put Chinese handset maker, ZTE, ahead of Apple in terms of mobile market share, knocking the Californian company back down into fifth place overall for 2010.

Both ZTE and Apple saw incredible growth last year, posting up increases in sales of 94% and 84% over 2009’s tallies respectively. This surge by the two companies means that RIM and Motorola do not feature at all in the top five, despite being two of the strongest mobile companies in recent years.

The top of the chart remains unchanged from 2009, with Nokia sitting at the top, with Samsung and LG behind.

While LG’s sales dropped a little, Samsung experienced an excellent year, managing to increase sales by just over 23%, no doubt thanks to the rapidly growing smartphone market and its successful Galaxy S Android phone.

The Korean manufacturer still has a long way to go before it can truly challenge for the top spot, however, as the 2010 figures put Nokia’s total sales at almost twice the number of Samsung’s (453 million compared to 280).
