Amazon Android app store to let you buy apps without a phone

Amazon’s take on the App Store will let you buy apps and games for your Android mobile or tablet even before you have a device to run them on.

Amazon is still planning to open its own alternative to the Android Market for buying apps and games. Unlike the Android Market – or other app stores that we are aware of – you will be able to hop on to Amazon and stock up on apps even if you don’t have an Android device to run them on.

Why would you want to do that? Well, say you had ordered a new phone or tablet and want to buy some apps while you were waiting for it to be delivered – the Amazon app store would let you do that, saving them to your account for later download.

This is very much like the way the Amazon Kindle Store works for books – your purchases are associated with your account rather than with your Kindle device – allowing you to enjoy your content on other devices or via the web. Its an interesting idea for an app store and it will be even more interesting to see if this means you will be able to carry your apps around with you from device to device, particularly as more people have multiple Android gadgets such as tablets and set-top boxes.
