An unconfirmed rumor from a recently reliable source today pointed to Apple launching the iPad in March.
The company would have a "small event" to kick off the new tablet in late February and would ship it sometime in March, releasing it slightly earlier than last year. Reporting site MacOtakara wasn't sure which countries would be included in the launch beyond the US.
The tip doesn't have corroborating evidence other than independent rumors of a Marchrelease target, but it comes from a source that has more than once obtained next-generation iPad parts and might have deeper contact than most.
A more tangible tip has pointed to Target helping AT&T maintain some of its iPhone subscribers as Verizon launches Apple's hardware. The store will have a trade-in program between February 6 and 12 that gives discounts between $100 and $200 for those who trade in at least a 16GB iPhone 3G and up to a 32GB iPhone 3GS as they sign up for an iPhone 4 on AT&T. Getting the cash back requires signing up for a new two-year contract and bringing in a working phone.
The deal follows trade-in options from AT&T and Verizon trying to either keep iPhone customers loyal or entice them to switch. The discounts aren't as large as for some dedicated trade-in services or auctions but could help minimize the cost of upgrading for those who prefer convenience first.
