Blame it on those giant companies which have churned out one impressive product after another, the fake-makers are multiplying like gremlins from the bathtub. As they, the fake-makers, grow in numbers, so did the knockoffs that go right into the black market.
We used to complain about this, as we pass through stalls that have mushroomed in many parts of the metropolis, selling fakes and even proud of it.
Sometimes, we admit to almost giving in to the temptation of getting one, especially if the fake in front of us looks oh-so-real. Anyway, the sin is consumated by only a few bucks.
But we held on. Until one day, a box found its way into the MB Technews lab. And our frenzied tech life just got a bit frenzier.
The box looks deceitly official with just a picture of the product on the front cover and bold "MID" pasted on one side. We swear, the first time we saw it, we judged it to be costing somewhere in the five figures.
So how much, you may want to know, is this device which we found out can be purchased in Divisoria?
We're raising one hand and closing a finger, or two. That's how much you need to shell out to get this device.
We Googled this device, and amazingly found out several units of different brands but flaunting the same specs.
And most of the early buyers appear to be happy with the unit.
It comes with a leather case, keyboard, a stylus and a wired RJ-45 LAN interface convertor. The leather, we found out, is fake so we're then convinced the main product was not genuine.
What more we found out later?
The version that was shipped on the device claimed to be Android 2.2, but actually it's 1.6. Also this device claims to be 256MB while it actually is 128MB.
The Kernel version 2.6.29-00236-g4f8dbbb-dirty. The build number is WMT2.1.1, and the model number says generic.
It has 2 SD slots that allow for the pad to be expanded to 32GB. It has a resistive touch screen that is highly responsive and it has 2 regular size USB ports with a HDMI port and a Ethernet port.
It supports Wifi and will allow a 3G interface through the USB. The battery life is relatively short, and seems to to heat up with use but it doesn't get too hot. The camera/camcorder is a 1.3 MP. The resolution of the camera is poor.
It has a 7-inch, 800 x 480 pixels display, a 400MHz ARM-based CPU and a SD card slot for expansion. There’s also an accelerometer which allows the screen to auto-rotate.
However, we laud its unique design and the tons of features compliments of the Android 1.6 Operating System.
In the end, we decided not to use the word "fake" for this device.Compared to the first generation knockoffs, this unit has improved a lot.
The user interface, for one, looks better and two, it has a more responsive screen.
It doesn't really look like a cheap imitation -- just don't look closer.
