LG preps 72-inch and mobile ATSC TVs with 3D for CES

LG tonight gave another preview of its CES 2011 mix by showing what it said would be the largest 3D-capable TV yet as well as a portable 3D TV for the new mobile ATSC format. At 72 inches, the LZ9700 is much larger than the previous best 60-inch 3D sets and should provide a more immersive effect. Most details aren't known, but it will have a full 480Hz refresh rate, LED backlighting and LG's usual Internet video and TV app store support.

The mobile TV is a prototype and will support mobile ATSC broadcasts with glasses-free 3D, even at speeds of up to 200km/h (124mph). The chip at the heart of the TV will also find its way elsewhere and will carry a data channel that can be used in smartphones or other devices with two-way control. A demo phone at CES will have a sample feed from local TV station KLAS that will give it coupons from Toyota.

More details will be available for the LZ9700's launch at CES, but the mobile TV technology isn't likely to be made into a shipping prod.
